The livestock display and shows are always an enjoyable and educational part of the Celtic Celebration. During the Games, visitors will have an opportunity to see many different animals of Celtic origin. The following are some of the livestock, dogs and horses you may see at the Games.
Scottish Shorthorn
Shorthorns spread to Scotland before the end of the 18th century and were imported to the U.S.Ayrshire
This breed developed in the County of Ayr before the 19th century and are red and white.Highland
They are distinguished by their unique shaggy coats of hair and striking set of elegant horns. Believed to be the oldest known European breed of cattle, the Highlands are always a source of admiration to everyone.Soay
The Soay may be the only remaining example of the small, primitive sheep found in the British Isles prior to the arrival of the Norse and the Romans.
Connemara
The Connemara is Ireland’s only indigenous pony, a moorland breed that is fast, a superb jumper, and big enough to be ridden by older children and lightweight adults.
Clydesdale
This heavy horse originated in the 18th century in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Observe the gentle character, yet awesome strength of Clydesdale horses as they perform in the six-horse hitch.Border Collie
This sheep herding dog developed in the border country of England and Scotland, thus earning the first half of its name. Two border collies, both Ontario novice champions in sheep herding, will delight audiences as the owners take them through their paces. The dog must be controlled only by the whistle tones from their master as they drive sheep through a prescribed course.Dandie Dinmont
Originally bred for farm use in the borders between England and Scotland in the 1600s, these dogs are plucky hunters and diggers after field pests like rats, foxes, badgers and weasels.Other breeds at this year's dog show include the Deerhound, Smooth Hair Collie, Bearded Collie, Long Hair Collie, Sheltie, Gold Retriever, Gordon Setter, West Highland Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Cairn Terrier and the Skye Terrier.
