Burning of The Viking Ship
• Grand Finale to Highland Games •
A
Viking ship at the Highland Games may seem a little incongruous, but
there is a tenuous connection. The Vikings are an important part of
European history, they settled many areas in Europe and briefly L'Anse
aux Meadows in North America. Because of this they influenced and were
influenced by the Celts. The Vikings believed that all should end in
flames to speed the soul to Asgard and immortality. So when the Highlands
of Durham Games founding committee took on a huge task in 1996 in trying
to establish a four day Celtic Festival in Durham Region they decided
to burn a Viking ship to attain "immortality " for the games
striving to establish and respect tradition. So on Sunday during the
closing ceremony a Viking ship will be burnt, and hopefully our Viking ship will carry
the dreams and aspirations of the children who helped build her, and inspire
them - after all what is Asgard for?
